Split was the last stop in our Croatian adventure. We were only there for 2 ½ days and unfortunately, my poor husband got a stomach virus and missed out completely on Split. But at least I wasn’t alone with 2 little ones…I conquered the beautiful gorgeous city with my babies, sister, and mother-in-law.
Again, before you travel, I highly recommend purchasing the Croatia and Slovenia book by Rick Steves. So much helpful tips and recommendations on things to do here. This seriously helped me with my planning process for this Europe trip. I plan on buying a Rick Steves book for each place outside the US because it was that helpful.
We came to Split on a ferry from Hvar using this company. Hvar travel guide post here. It was a one hour ferry ride perfect for little ones because they weren’t confined in a seat. They can walk around and play in a small kid zone area so thank the heavens for that lol. They entertained themselves the whole ferry ride.
Where we stayed:
Airbnb: We stayed at another Airbnb. This time it was a little bit further from old town, about a 15 min walk downhill. It was on the 2nd floor so not bad at all and the walk to old town was all downhill. Again, not bad but the walk up was a little exhausting because it was slightly steeper. But the apt was very large, had multiple bathrooms, spacious kitchen, washer, and fit 8 people total. Our host even arranged a car service from the ferry and to the airport when it was time to leave and with car seats upon request.
Where we ate:
I wish I jotted this down more but it was crazy with the kids. We did do a ton of juice bars and Acai bowls while we were there. There was one restaurant near the park that had AMAZING ice tea. Everything you eat is so good there that I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all.
What we did:
We explored the Diocletian’s Palace. So historical and beautiful. We also walked around Old Town and People’s Square. We literally took pictures of everything. I mean, you see a random stone stairway and want to take a picture of it because it so pretty. Everywhere you walk there are open-air cafes to eat at or just sit and have a drink or two or maybe three. We shopped, sampled olive oils (my favorite), and ate.
In Split, we actually had no planned activities which made it real nice for the kids and I. We enjoyed walking around and exploring without being on a time schedule. Our entire Europe trip I had us booked out for everything to get the most out of our experience, but I wanted Split to be more relaxing and on the boys pace. We went to 2 different parks for them to play at. The parks in Split were so nice because they were outdoors but shaded and also gated so they can’t run off in the street. They were really nice parks. The idea was to let them run around and get tired and then we go shopping after. Ha!
Beach:
We went to Beach Trstenik. Again, another sandy beach, YAY!!! It was a little more crowded but not too bad at all. The beach was 10 min walk from our apartment which was convenient. There were a bunch a restaurants, bars and music playing and they even had another park at the top of a little hill for kids. FYI, if traveling to Croatia with little ones, I noticed a ton of parks there. Make use out of them even it’s for 30 min so they get their time in and hopefully it gets them a little worn out.
Things you should do that I didn’t get to do in the amount of time we were there:
If, I should say when we go back…lol, I would have loved to have done KRKA National Park and Plitvice Lakes. It was quite a drive from Split and I think it would have been way too much to do with the kids. But another time we will go back and do this since Doug missed Split due to being sick. Plitvice has the best waterfalls from what I read. It’s one of Europe’s most breathtaking and crystal clear natural lake with an amazing mountainous backdrop. You don’t actually get to go in the lake there, but you can hike it all to see it. Don’t worry, from what I read you can choose from multiple hike options and different levels (I would be a beginner LOL). Must do if you go!!! Pease send me pics.
On the top left is a picture of Plitvice Lakes and to the right is KRKA National Park.
Next up was our final stop on our European adventure….Paris!
Xoxo,
