Did you know there is an order to applying your skincare products? Oils, serums, toners, oh my! I get it, it can be a bit overwhelming starting out. In fact, my family and friends are always asking if there’s a right way to apply them and there is. Here, I’ll show you how to properly apply your skincare products in the right order. I’ll break it down for your day and evening routines.
Since this is a hot topic for many of my followers and friends, I thought I would layout my typical morning and evening routine for you. Be sure to follow me on Instagram for a tutorial later this week.
My skincare routine is designed to be quick and easy. To some, it may seem like a lot to apply, but to trust me, each product has its role in making my skin clean, dewy, and blemish-free. Here’s how to properly apply your skincare products.
How to Properly Apply Your Skincare Products
Order is essential to ensuring your products can perform at it’s best. You’ll notice that my daytime routine is different than my evening routine. I’ll also list out what products I am currently using.
Side note: Ever wonder how to get flawless-looking skin when wearing your makeup? It all starts with great clean skin.
Daytime Skincare Ritual
Apply your skincare products in the exact order shown below.
- Cleanse the skin. My go-to for the past 8 months has been the no-rinse cleanser, Blue Aura Cleanser by Odacite. Perfect for on the go and made with healing ingredients such as turmeric, holy basil, aloe vera, and Micelles.
- Toner. This is where you bring hydration back into your skin. You’ll want to ensure you spritz this on damp skin before you apply your serums and oils. I have been loving Wabi-Sabi Botanicals (use code PRECIOUSIMEBLOG), Me Time Botanicals (use code PTB10), and Agent Nateur (use code: Chic).
- Eye Serum: I like to apply an eye serum on my bare skin before any oils because I really want those powerhouse ingredients to penetrate into those fine lines and dark circles. LOVING Agent Nateur Eye Gel, and Fitglow Eye Serum, use code: Chic for both. I’ll use the Fitglow during the day and Agent Nateur at night.
- Serum: While your skin is damp (if not spray more toner/mist), apply your serum. A serum is designed to target your skin’s particular needs. If you have mature skin then find a serum for that, if you want an anti-aging serum or a serum for sensitive skin, find one for that. Whatever your skin needs are, use that serum. Not an OIL. I’ll get to that in a sec…Here’s what I’ll use (I alternate each day). May Lindstrom Youth Dew serum or Valley of Light Serum by Wabi-Sabi Botanicals (use code PRECIOUSIMEBLOG).
- **Optional: I know this may be a bit excessive but sometimes I’ll apply 2 serums during the day. Only because I want that Hyaluronic Acid to plump fine lines and wrinkles and I’m a bit EXTRA sometimes LOL. I’ll apply either Osea Hyaluronic Sea Serum or the Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum. Both are my Botox in a bottle product. Use code: Welcome10
- Oil: The oil is made to lock-in moisture and hydrates the surface-level of the skin. I love True Botanicals Oil or the Ayuna Cellular Oil.
- Sun Screen: It’s important to wear your SPF my friends! I love this one by Kypris and Crunchi.
- Then, of course, your face primer and makeup.
I know this seems like a lot, but you apply it all so quickly that it takes less than 5 minutes.
Evening Routine
- Pre-Cleanse: On days that I wear makeup, I double cleanse my skin to ensure I have EVERYTHING removed. If I’m not wearing make-up I skip this step. I use True Botanicals Pre Cleanser.
- Cleanser: I alternate between my oil cleansers such as Wabi-Sabi or Pleni Naturals (code: Precious15) and use the Wabi-Sabi Face Cloth to remove and pull everything gently off my face. Because the new Wabi-Sabi Oil Cleanser is now rinsable, I will SOMETIMES use my Holistic Beauties BFF (click for 40% off) tool to exfoliate and cleanse the skin.
- Exfoliate: I exfoliate at least 2-3x a week to help get rid of all the dead skin. It’s necessary to really help gently scrub all the buildup off your face. I like the May Lindstrom Clean Dirt.
- Masks: By far my favorite evening ritual. I mask about 4x a week. You don’t have to do this, but I recommend at least 2-3x a week. Alternating between something hydrating and some sort of detox mask would be my recommendation. The ones I use are May Lindstrom Problem Solver, Wabi-Sabi Botanicals Valley of Light Mask, Me Time Botanicals Berry Enzyme Mask, Tata Harper Floral Hydrating Mask, and Laurel’s Honey Spice Rose Mask.
- Toner: Always add that toner in to re-hydrate your skin. In the evening, hands down, I love my Agent Nateur Rose Toner mixed with the Vitamin C powder, code: CHIC. Talk about the ultimate youthful hydration with so many healing benefits.
- Eye Serum: I like to apply an eye serum on my bare skin before any oils because I really want those powerhouse ingredients to penetrate into those fine lines and dark circles. LOVING Agent Nateur Eye Gel, and Fitglow Eye Serum use code: Chic for both.
- Serum: For the evening, I LOVE my Agent Nateur Holi Oil. It has all the things such as, hyaluronic acid and many youth benefits. I’ve re-purchased this one 3 times already. All her products are worth every penny. Use code: Chic for 10% off.
- Oil or Balm or both. There are days my skin is so dry I need both a balm and oil to hydrate my face. For an evening oil, I love my True Botanicals oil. For a balm, I love the Me Time Botanicals Clean Slate Balm (use code: PTB10), Laurel Balm, Mahalo Balm (use code: ref_prcioustimeblog), and May Lindstrom.
- Gua Sha: An evening ritual that helps with lymphatic drainage, the tension in the face, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. It’s the ultimate natural face lift without the needles and toxins. I have some IGTV videos on Instagram if you want to see how I use the tool. I use Odacite and Wabisabi.
