In this post, I will share some amazing non-toxic products for kids that are 100% clean, safe, and effective.

How many mamas out there immediately wanted the best for their little ones as soon as they got pregnant? I’m sure all of you. I know I am not the only one who started looking into safer products to put on our babies, am I right? It’s like there was something in the back of our minds that switched as soon as we knew we were carrying a little human.

But, starting out wasn’t easy for me. I relied on what was advertised and marketed as being “clean,” but later realized I was Greenwashed by a few that I trusted. Can you believe Babyganics being one of them? Their shampoo contains phenoxyethanol. For more information about greenwashing, read THIS POST!

Getting Personal About Sensitivities

When I got pregnant with my first child, my non-toxic product search went into overload. I wanted to ensure I was using safe, clean, and effective products on his delicate skin. I bought organic diapers, organic clothing (not a ton) but I really wanted to do everything right. Plus, I wanted to stay away from products containing toxic ingredients that can lead to hormonal disruptions, health issues, rashes, etc…

Fast forward with baby number two, he had sensitivities right from the beginning. It started with me having to cut dairy out of my diet when I nursed him but, as he grew older, he began breaking out in eczema-like rashes. So bad that when it would happen in his diaper area, he would bleed. My heart would break and I became determined to get to the root of the cause but every time we saw the doctor, they would say it was just eczema and prescribe a cream. Enough was enough.

The Root of the Cause

Through research, I found that eczema is not a normal skin issue. It’s so common that everyone thinks it’s the new normal. “Oh yea he/she has eczema.” I can’t tell you how many times I would hear this. How can it be? Why is this something continuously popping up for people? Let me explain briefly – it’s the foods we eat, the products we use, the water we drink, etc… We are what we eat and consume, internally and topically, and all of that affects the gut. Poor gut = poor health. More on this topic later in the future…

Not to drag the story out but, eventually, we saw a functional medicine doctor who ran blood work to determine the root cause. FOOD. He had a food sensitivity to eggs. We also found that he was sensitive to ingredients such as seaweed (a clean ingredient found in products). The point I am trying to make is, follow your gut and understand that something like “eczema” is not a normal skin issue. There’s usually an underlying root cause.

Resources At Your Fingertips

Now that I have done my fair share of research, found out about the Think Dirty app and the EWG app, (not sure what those are? Read Greenwashing post here), I am now pretty confident to know what to look out for and hopefully, also be of resource to you. So there you have it- Think Dirty, EWG, and Me as your resources.

Non-Toxic Body Products For Kids

With that being said, I often get asked what I use, body-wise, on my boys. So I put together this post on all the products I like to use. I keep things very clean and simple since they don’t require much maintenance just yet lol. As always, if there’s something I’m missing from this post, don’t hesitate to reach out. Hope this helps you mamas with determining what to use on your kiddos.

Non-Toxic Shower/Bath Products

Bath products can be very tricky since a lot on the market aren’t as clean as they are being marketed to be. I admit, I was “Greenwashed” by a few when I first started and I would hate for that to happen to you. So luckily for you, I’m here to give you the lowdown on products I trust and use.

  • California Baby: I have been using this one since I had my first baby and love it. This was the only brand I was using that was 100% clean (thank goodness I was using at least one clean non-greenwashing product). Although it is a pricier brand, I now see why. As my blogger friend Chantal from @chooseloveart once said, don’t ask why eating clean is expensive, ask why other products are so cheap. Although she was referring to food, the same goes for products. Cheaper products equal cheaper ingredients.
  • California Baby products are all rated 3 and under which is CLEAN on the Think Dirty app. YES! I have used an array of their products and they are so so good.
  • Pleni Naturals: Every mama out there needs to try this body wash! Heck, everyone needs to try this body wash because I use it to and love it. Made with veggies and fruit extracts to help hydrate your skin and balance your pH system. Did I mention it smells incredible? I could eat it. (Use Code: PRECIOUS15 at checkout)
  • Aleavia: Even though I recently found out that my kids and I are allergic to seaweed (this product contains that ingredient), I LOVED this prebiotic cleanser. Prebiotics are great because they help nourish and feed the skin with superfoods. It’s also amazing for eczema, psoriasis, blemishes, and much more. The best part is, it contains 7-8 ingredients depending on the scent you purchase.
  • California Baby Bubble Bath: Again, another clean product from this brand. My boys have been into taking showers instead of baths lately so, unfortunately, I haven’t purchased this in a few months. But, we used this product a lot in the past and I still recommend it.

Non-Toxic Body Oil and Lotions

  • Pleni Naturals: I love and prefer to use oils as I feel like it’s very hydrating and seeps right into your damp skin. This is my favorite one for the kids. I purchased a few to have in the bathroom and travel bags because it’s really the perfect size. Love this one a lot. I like to use it when traveling so I’m only carrying one product for all of us. (Use Code: PRECIOUS15 at checkout)
  • Kosmatology: I love their lotion bars so much. Perfect for the kids to apply on themselves and they’re made with the simplest and cleanest ingredients. We use THIS one and it’s amazing for eczema-prone skin. So many healing benefits and doesn’t contain any water or alcohol that will dry out your skin. Best to apply on damp skin.
  • Weleda Lotion: I use this lotion for the kiddos. What I like to do is layer it when their skin needs some extra love. Add your body oils first then top with the lotion.
  • California Baby Lotion: Another gem I love. I go back and forth between this one and the Weleda one. I love that this one is a pump, but it’s harder to travel with because I’m afraid the pump will bust. Personal issues I know…But I keep this one in their rooms for backups.

Eczema

I remember seeing one of Kosmatology’s Instagram stories a while back where they chatted about eczema. Something that stood out to me was the use of alcohol. Alcohol is in A LOT of products, even in natural and organic ones. Although alcohol is a perfectly safe, clean preservative and ingredient, if you suffer from eczema, the alcohol tends to aggravate it. Plus, their lotion bar, which I talk about next, has ingredients that support and heals eczema.

  • Kosmatology Lotion Bar: I am so obsessed with this bar. First off, it’s so unique because it comes in a bar, but it works SO well. You don’t have to worry about anything leaking when traveling and your little ones can feel independent by rubbing lotion on themselves. Apply on damp skin and you’ll notice an immediate difference in the way your skin feels.

The grapefruit scented bar is perfect for those with eczema as it helps to calm the irritated skin and is packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants. The grapefruit promotes healing with its anti-inflammatory effects and helps to prevent eczema patches from becoming infected.

  • Egyptian Magic: My youngest has a bit of eczema behind his knees and whenever he has those flareups, I turn to Egyptian Magic. I heard about this product through Kate Hudson and it’s her holy grail product that she uses on her face. It’s a balm great for so many things. But I personally use it on my boys for some extra love when they have an eczema breakout. I don’t travel without it. I took it to Europe with us last year and it came in handy. It’s seriously magic in a bottle.

Non-Toxic Bug Spray:

  • Kosmotalgy: This bug repellent stick comes in eco-friendly packaging and is the perfect size to travel with. No leaking, no glass, and kids can apply themselves. I keep mine in my purse.
  • California Baby: I purchased this one a few times and love it. You do need to apply a lot on you and your kids when getting eaten alive during the summertime, but its clean and works amazing. I started making my own so I don’t purchase this anymore, but I do really like it.

Non-Toxic Hand Sanitizer

  • Kosmatology: I love the Kosmotology brands because they work, are the perfect size, non-toxic, and very inexpensive. I keep one in my purse and never travel without it.

Non-Toxic Lip Balm for the Winter

  • Cocokind MyMatcha Stick: This stick is truly multi-purposeful. I use it for under-eye hydration, chapstick, eczema, dry skin…the list goes on. In the winter, my oldest is constantly licking his lips and will break out in a rash, so I use the MyMatcha stick and it helps tremendously. Very inexpensive and under $9. You can purchase from Follain and use code ref_precioustimeblog for 15% off.

Organic Towels

Sol Organics: These organic towels have to be the best investment EVER! Why I waited so long is beyond me. These fair trade, plush, and organic towels are the most luxurious towels ever wrapped around you. Made without phthalates, formaldehyde, or toxic chemicals (yes, towels also contain those nasty ingredients too).

Ok mamas, hope this post covered everything you wanted to know about switching to cleaner products for your little ones. As always, I’m here to be a resource for you and should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

XO,

Natalie
