A few months ago, I posted a pic on how I detox my pits a few months ago, and let’s just say how grateful I am by each and every one of your response about it. The amount of DM’s, comments, and reviews was so tremendous that I decided to write an actual blog post as to what armpit detox is, why  and how to do it, why you should make the switch to cleaner deodorant, and lastly, where to begin with it all?

You wanted more about this subject, so I am bringing it all to you right here in this post. In addition, I will do a quick tutorial on my instastories (I’ll save on my highlights as well), on how I detox them. So here is a full post talking all about pits and the importance it is to ensure 1) you’re using clean products  and 2) you detox them every once in a while.

Switching to non-toxic deodorant

Most common conventional deodorants contain aluminum which contain heavy metal buildup in the body that can soak into your lymph nodes. That can lead to acute or chronic toxicity as well as cancer and Alzheimers. Let’s not forget about all the other toxic ingredients such as triclosan, parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, and fragrance.  All of this being applied everyday being trapped in your body for years can be damaging on a person.  If you had to make the switch to anything non-toxic related right now, make the deodorant switch. Think about it, you wear deodorant every single day 365 days a year, and for some folks, they reapply a few times a day. That is a whole lot of toxins soaking into your skin every single day.

Aluminum is put in deodorant to basically keep you from sweating by blocking your pores and help so you don’t get wet.  The problem is, we were made to sweat, and our body uses sweat as a way to clear toxins from our bodies. Don’t mask your odor with more toxins. It doesn’t do you any favor. Instead, switch to cleaner deodorant, detox your pits (I’ll talk about this more later), and simply eat clean and healthy because as you may have heard, what you put into your body must comes out and that includes the way you smell.

Tips for Making a successful switch:

1. Understand that switching to non-toxic deodorant and having it work right away isn’t realistic. Your body needs time to detox all the chemicals you’ve been applying throughout the years. Be patient and stick with it. I promise it’s SO worth it and no chemical is worth your health. Aluminum based deodorants has been trapping toxins in your pits and throughout your body, so once you decide to make the switch to cleaner deodorant, it can take anywhere from 2-5 weeks for all the bad toxins to leave your system causing you to sweat more. This is OK! Allow time for adjustment and don’t quite.

2. Start when the weather isn’t so hot all the time. If you’re nervous about sweating so much, start when the weather is at cooler temps. This is only if you are really nervous about all the sweat in hot temps, but I would recommend starting NOW or at an any given time.

3. Say NO to Baking Soda! I have heard so many people tell me that they tried switching to a natural deodorant but have given up because they would get itchy. Then I would ask them if their deodorant contains baking soda and the answer was always yes. The ingredient…baking soda. I read an article by a holistic doctor who had said “It’s not about if you have a reaction to the baking soda, it’s when you’ll have it.” This is true on sooo many levels. I started off using the native deodorant which contains baking soda. 1-2 months in, I was fine.  But then after that, I started to get itchy under my pits and realized it was caused by the baking soda. Be on the look out for that ingredient and if you see it, don’t buy it.

Rub a little Apple Cider Vingegar on your pits to help with the detox process. ACV will help change the PH level and stop bad bacteria.

4. Detox your pits! I have been using a natural deodorant for about 4 years now and I have found that detoxing your pits about once a week helps with odor and keeping that area clean. I buy this Bentonite Indian Healing Clay and mix with equal parts clay and apple cider vinegar. Rub on pits and allow to mask for 5-20 min. Then rinse warm and repeat once a week or 2X a week if your new to the deodorant switch. This will help with the underarm odor.

5. Exfoliate you pits! Don’t neglect the pits my friends. On days you are exfoliating your face, exfoliate the pits to give it a deep cleanse. I make my own exfoliate using pink Himalayan sea salt (because it kills bacteria) and essential oils. Here is my recipe below. You can shop Young Living Essential Oils Here.

Citrus Exfoliating Scrub Recipe

  1. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup Himalayan sea salt (Look in beauty/skincare dept for the one not for food).
  2. Then add 2 tbsp of Jojoba oil or coconut oil (carrier oil) with 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil and 3 drops of lemon essential oil.
  3. Rub on dry pits and rinse.

6. Be careful shaving and applying deodorant right after. Shaving can cause irritation under the pits because your pores will be open and applying deodorant too soon can cause irritation. Instead, get dressed and ready and apply deodorant last.

6. Eat Clean and Healthy! You are what you eat and if you are putting processed foods and tons of refined sugar, white flour into your body, then your body is sweating out all those dirty toxins causing you to sweat and smell toxic. Drink a ton of water, eat fresh fruits and veggies, and eliminate processed foods as much as possible.

8. Don’t give up! If one natural deodorant isn’t working for you after a few months, try another, and another until you find one that you like. Just be sure to avoid baking soda at all cost. Stick with it during the transitional changes and allow your body to really adjust and detox all the toxins in your pits. Again, this can take several weeks but I promise it’s so worth it.

Lastly, here are a few of my favorite deodorants that I personally use and that works. I also added some other options that have mild baking soda that my sister loves.
