Summer time is right around the corner which means it’s time to break out the sunscreen. But before you do, let’s take a closer look as to what kind of sunscreen you should be looking out for and why getting some natural sun on your body is actually good for you.

Growing up, we all have been told to apply sunscreen 15 min before actually going into the sun. However, more and more studies are actually showing that laying in direct sunlight for about 15-20 per day (without sunscreen), is how you’ll gain adequate vitamin D. You’ll hear blogger Dr. Courtney Kahla talk about it all the time on her Instagram. So many people, myself included are vitamin D deficient. Reason being, we don’t get enough sunlight (natural vitamin D) a day. Read her post HERE, for more insightful info on why natural Vitamin D is critical for the human body. I’ve learned to not apply sunscreen over SPF 30 on myself and my children right away. I allow us to soak up that Vitamin D naturally until we start to turn slightly pinkish and I also don’t apply it on every single day. You don’t need to.

What type of Sunscreen should I be looking for that’s natural and clean?

Ok, so now that we discussed why Vitamin D from direct sunlight is good for you, let’s move on with what type of ingredients you should be looking out for. As you recall with a few of my Greenwashing posts, you don’t want to get suckered into buying products you think are clean and what company’s are marketing their products to being “safe”.  You want to be sure to avoid anything listed below as these all seep into your skin and can cause a ton of hormonal disruption, toxicity, cancer, thyroid issues, and much more…

SPF Ingredients to Avoid:

  • Benzophenone
  • Homosalate
  • Styrene Acrylates Copolymer
  • Chlorphenesin
  • Para-aminobenzoic acid or PABA
  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate

  • Butane or propane
  • Padimate O
  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Polyethylene
  • PEGs (polyethylene glycol)
  • Parabens (butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben…etc.)
  • Retinyl Palmitate
  • Fragrance (You know I hate anything with Fragrance listed as an ingredient)

Here are the ones we use in our household that are safe and effective

  • Badger Sunscreen and Sunscreen Sport: Our whole family loves this sunscreen. We have quite a few of them laying all throughout the house in the summer time. The Sport one is great for the water as is won’t rinse off. The other one is great for being outside for a long period of time (after your 15-20 min of natural Vitamin D of course).
  • Badger sunscreen Stick: I keep this bad boy in my purse throughout Spring and Summer just as a backup. I mainly apply it on the kids faces but you can apply it all over if needed.
  • Think Baby: This is a great one as well. My boys school has a mini water park and I usually keep this in their swim bags for water park days. The school supplies sunscreen for the kids there  but I would MUCH rather send them my own. Plus my boys have very sensitive skin.
  • Suntegrity: I got this as a sample in one of my Citrine purchases and I love it. I use it on my face sometimes under makeup and it’s great. Use code: ref_precioustimeblog for 15% off if purchasing from Follain
  • Kypris Pot of Shades: Love this one. I usually will wear this under my makeup if I know I am going to be somewhere in the sun for a long period of time. I don’t want sun marks and early signs of aging so I make sure my face is protected.
  • Kari Gran three sixty five SPF2 28: Another freebie I received from Follain and it comes in 2 different sizes. This one is amazing and can be used as a primer. At least I have before and it was great.  Use code: ref_precioustimeblog for 15% off if purchasing from Follain

Other clean products that I’ve heard are great and non-toxic

XOXO,
Natalie
