Often times, people ask me if they can use an oil-based cleanser when they have oily skin. The truth is, oil cleansing is BEST for those with oily skin; and really ALL skin types. Here is the truth about oil cleansing and why you should make the switch.
Back to Basics
Why oil cleanse? You probably have been hearing all the hype lately about oil cleansers and in fact, have seen so many brands come out with an oil-based cleanser. When applying oil on the skin, you are gently rubbing away all those impurities, makeup, dirt, and grime. The oils help to pull all of those daily pollutants and bacteria off your skin leaving you with a soft smooth canvas, not to mention…a very hydrated canvas.
If you’re anything like my grandmother was, she was a fan of just water. But as I learned more about cleansers and how to effectively clean the skin, water won’t do the trick when cleansing your face. Why? Your skin contains natural oils and as I’m sure you’re aware, water and oil don’t mix, which means you’re not fully cleansing and removing much of anything from your face. Say hello to acne and build-up…Conventional soap won’t work either because all that’s doing is stripping the natural oils from your face leaving you with dry, less hydrated skin. After consistent use of a conventional soap cleanser, you’re more likely to see more premature aging, fine lines, and dryness.
Oil cleansers work perfectly because it penetrates deep into your skin really helping your skin’s natural oils.
The Myth About Oil Cleansing
So, here is the myth about oil cleansing. “I have oily skin so an oil-based cleanser is no good for me.” Quite the contrary my friends. Fear not about becoming oilier and contributing to more breakouts. Oil cleansers will help clear your pores, won’t strip or damage the skin, pull out bacteria, unclog pores, and gently remove dead skin cells. The results…CLEAN, CLEAR, HYDRATED skin. You’ll glow like JLo #GOALS.
Recommended Oil Cleansers
I have tried several oil-based cleansers, but there are a handful that really stand out for me.
- True Botanicals Pre-Cleanse: OBSESSED with this pre-cleanser sooo much. I use this one first (just on the days I am wearing makeup) and then use another one of the oil-based cleansers mentioned below to fully remove all of my makeup. It’s amazing and a little goes a long way.
- Wabi-Sabi Botanicals: The holy grail of oils. It contains no essential oils, which make this perfect for acne-prone skin, coffee to awaken the skin and help with dark circles, and believe it or not, her oil-based cleanser is a RINSABLE one. I prefer using my organic washcloth to remove the cleanser, but I have tried it with the water and works amazing. Use Code: PRECIOUSTIMEBLOG
- Pleni Naturals: Such an amazing cleanser. I go back and forth between this one and the Wabi-Sabi one and am never without either. It’s made with Papaya Enzyme to gently dissolve dead skin cells. This brand is also Made-Safe Certified, which means they go the extra mile to ensure all the ingredients used are pure and clean. Use Code: PRECIOUS15
- Laurel: I like this oil because it smells divine. I feel like a needed a few more extra pumps of the products to loosen up my makeup, but I still like it very much. Laurel is a seed to seal brand, which is what I love about her products.
- Pai Skincare: This vitamin C loaded skincare is amazing. It contains geranium and jasmine oil. This baby will wash away all those impurities.
- May Lindstrom: Pendulum Potion Cleanser. I received this as a sample and loved it. It’s a pricier bottle, but anything May puts on the market is true GOLD.
I hope this helped clear some of the myths about oil cleansers and made you want to run out and try them. As I mentioned before, oil-based cleansers are the best on the market and so great for all skin types. You’ll notice an immediate difference in the way your skin looks and feels. Give it a try and let me know which one is your favorite it.
