6 Sustainable Bathroom Swaps

With Earth Day quickly approaching, it’s a great reminder of the simple ways we can contribute to living a more sustainable lifestyle. Making the switch doesn’t have to be difficult. I totally get that you can be a little hesitant to trying new sustainable products because of the uncertainty of knowing if they’ll work up to your standards. But, I got you covered.

In this blog post, you’ll find some simple and amazing performing bathroom products that you’ll fall in love with. Let’s get started!

6 Sustainable Bathroom Swaps

If you were to go to your bathroom, what would you find? How many of the products you see are plastic, wasteful, and non-recyclable. It’s okay… To be honest, I have some of those as well. We are definitely not perfect. But, if we can make a few simple sustainable swaps, it’s a step in the right direction.

Why Sustainable Living?

Did You Know:  The average American produces 4.4 pounds of trash per day.  That’s over 1500 pounds per year! I’m sure by hearing that, you can imagine how the environment benefits from less waste. When reducing less waste, you are contributing to a better environment. Less waste ending up in landfills will reduce greenhouse gases, and create less pollution.

9 million tons of plastic (40% single-use plastic), end up in the ocean each year. EEK! So, let’s do our part in any small way we can.

The bathroom gives us space where we cleanse our bodies and create many small rituals to help us feel our best. While having sustainable products contribute to our rituals, using products that contain clean ingredients is something your body will thank you for later. Here are 6 Sustainable Bathroom Swaps that are not only great for the environment, but made with clean ingredients.

#1 Tampon Tribe Menstrual Cup

6 Sustainable Bathroom Swaps

Probably the number #1 product to switch out for women. Your vagina is one of the most absorbent and sensitive parts of your body, so when you are putting conventional products around or in your vagina, you’re exposing yourself to toxic chemicals. Tampon Tribe makes my favorite cup. What’s great is you put the cup in, and it’ll stay put for up to 12 hours. It’s also made with medical-grade TPE, which is used for medical devices due to its high degree of purity. You won’t find any latex, rubber, PVC, or B.S. Their cups are not only biocompatible and recyclable, but they’re also soft, flexible, and easy to clean.

Although tampons and pads are not the most sustainable of products, I do want to point out that if you prefer to use them, TAMPON TRIBE is the brand I love. Unlike other brands on the market, they only use 100% GOTS and ICEA certified organic cotton. Zero plastic, zero fillers, zero chemicals, and zero plastic, which means…. more happy turtles. What makes them even better, you can get their products delivered straight to your door without the fuss of remembering to buy some. I like to personally wear these at night and the cup during the day.

#2 Deodorant

Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants are filled with toxic chemicals and ingredients that are harmful to your body. Some common ingredients you’ll find include the following: Aluminum, parabens, phthalates, fragrance, and so much more. To read more on deodorant and armpits, read IS YOUR DEODORANT TOXIC? Many clean and non-toxic deodorants on the market are made with plastic. I have finally found a great, clean brand that is 100% zero-waste – and get this…it works!

#3 Safety Razor

Lisse Shave Safety Razor

Probably one of the most over-looked bathroom items is a razor. Besides the nasty ingredients on conventional razors lubricated strips, such as mineral oil, polyethylene glycol, aluminum salts, artificial colors, fragrance, many razors are not even recyclable and made of plastic. Roughly 2 billion razors are thrown away each year. Crazy, right?! They end up in oceans, which is so sad for marine life. Opt for a safety razor. Hear me out…they’re not as scary as they look. I made the switch almost 2 years ago and never looked back. They are zero waste and cost-efficient since all you’re buying are the blades themselves. You also get a closer shave, the blades are recyclable, and you get less razor burn and ingrown hair.

#4 Shampoo

Odacite Shampoo Bars

Clean shampoo has come a looong way. I can honestly say that I use and love two products on the market right now. One is a shampoo bar from Odacite. It looks just like a soap bar, but for the hair. This one lathers up and leaves your hair so soft and silky. The other is The Goop G.Tox Sea Salt Hair Scrub. I looove this one and use it about once a week for a good scalp clean. It comes in a glass jar and you scoop out the amount you prefer. It lathers so nice and helps with buildup on the hair and scalp.

#5 Toothpaste

I have been using David’s Toothpaste for a few years and I have nothing but good things to say about this toothpaste. Of course it’s made with clean, toxic-free ingredients, but let’s talk about the packaging. The tube itself comes in a recyclable metal tube. The packaging is FSC Certified Paperboard and the carton is made with 100% wind energy.

#6 Cleansing Cloths & Reusable Makeup Wipes

Cleansing cloths are my jam! You save so much money when using cloths or reusable makeup wipes and it’s so much better for the environment. Did I mention how amazing they actually feel? My personal favorite cleansing cloths are from Wabi-Sabi Botanicals. They’re ultra-soft and Organic, which is essential for sensitive and stressed skin. Conventional facial cloths are often sprayed with chemicals or are simply too rough for sensitive skin, causing irritation and redness. These Organic cotton & bamboo facial cloths are naturally antibacterial and can be used multiple times before washing. I also like a good Reusable Makeup Wipe for morning cleansing.

Although there are a plethora of clean sustainable products on the market, these are just a handful of some of my favorites. Have you tried any of these products or want to? Let me know which ones in the comments below.

XO,

Natalie
